My Daughter's life in my not so elegant words.

Monday, August 07, 2006

I must first apologize for not starting to write here one year ago, or even sooner. I will try to make up for my lack of recording the early days of your young exciting life by being diligent from this point forward.

Let's start at the beginning.

December 2004.
Your mother, Tina(shown here on the right) was finishing up nursing school at Bergen CC. To her credit, she was putting her all of her energy into doing well in her classes while still working 40 hours a week and taking care of me, your father. We had been trying for about year to get a family started, and after some setbacks we were hopeful that the EPT results were going to lead to something wonderful.

January 2005.
After classes were over and the excitement of the holidays subsided, your mother and I headed for La Jolla, CA to take a little vacation. Just before we left, Tina took the NJ Nursing Boards and felt horrible when she was done, thinking she didn't do well. Two days into our vacation your Mom found out that she was now officially a Registered Nurse in NJ, then we celebrated.

March 2005.
Your Father heads to Puerto Rico for a surf trip with his buddies.

August 2005.
We head to Bay Head, NJ and spend the night with the Gazas(Copernicus, Mary, Thomas & Clare), the Arnolds(Mike, Liz, Olivia & Jarrod) and the Farins(Boo, Sheila & David). Your Mom is quite pregnant at this point but she deals with the heat like she deals with the rest of her troubles; with a smile and a pleasant word.

August 12, 2005.
I'm at lunch in Edison, NJ (where I work) when your Mom calls me. She has just visited the Dr. and is told to pack a bag and return to the hospital. She is very calm when we talk, so I'm not nervous when I meet her at our house in Rutherford and head to Holy Name Hospital.

At the hospital the Dr's try to get you to come out early.

August 13, 2005.
Still Trying.

August 14, 2005.
8:23am You are born via cesarean section. As the Dr. lifts you half way out of your Mom's belly, the Nurse proclaims 'Its a girl'. She knew as soon as she saw your beautiful face.

I go down the hall with you as your Mom's belly is sewed up. The nurse asks your name, and I say Genevieve. Just then the Dr. comes out of the OR and yells, Caroline is a beautiful name, which is what Tina had told him a moment earlier. You are named Caroline Rita Gemelli, you weigh 7lbs 7oz. your middle name is after your Great Grandma, Rita Fowler who past away in 1986.

The nurses all agree you look like the gerber baby.

Your first visitor was your Uncle BJ.

All of your grandparents, Grandma & Grandpa Gemelli, Nana & Pop Dooley and your Aunt Peg and cousin Liam come shortly after.

Your Godfather Cope is there with a gift as well.

Your Mother was in a lot of pain the first few days, but like I mentioned earlier she's one tough cookie.

Labor Day weekend, 2005.
You make your first trip to Wildwood Crest, NJ.

October 2005.
Your first Halloween. You are dressed as Chicken Little and I take you to a few houses with some of the neighbors: Ben and his Father Jon Crowley, Patrick and Kerry and their Mother Katherine O'Keefe, Faith & Emma and their Mother Pink Hamilton.

Through most of this period your Mother and I were getting very little sleep. You were having a tough time getting comfortable with being on the outside world and you definitely let us know it.

November 2005.
Your first Thanksgiving. Many of your relatives join us for dinner.
The Gemellis: Maureen your Grandma, Bernie your Grandpa, BJ your Uncle and his girlfriend Jean.
The Dooleys: Kathleen your Nana, John your Pop, Peg your Aunt and Liam your cousin.
The Kearns: Maureen's sister Patricia, her husband Michael and their children, Megan, Patrick and Jason, and Jason's future wife, Zabrina.
The Carlocks: Maureen's sister Karen, her son Thomas, his wife Jude and their children Thomas and Tyler.
The Fowlers:Maureen's brother Jerome, his wife Eleanor, their Son's Jerome & Walter, Jerome's wife Marie and their children Shannon and Erin; and Walter's girlfriend.

That's enough history for the moment...

Let's get to the present.

Today you have truly become proficient in picking yourself up off the floor to a standing position without the help of anyone or anything. You've been walking well for at least a month now:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5413631934467681742&hl=en
and as you can see your first video has been posted to the internet.

Your vocabulary:
Mama - your first word
Dada - not used in context quite often
ByeBye- you say this and wave quite well
Doggy - this is the only word you seem to use correctly all the time

We just got back from spending time with the Gaza's in Bay Head, NJ. You had a great time wandering around the large beach house, playing with Thomas & Clare and their friend Faith and going in the Ocean with your Father.

That's enough for now, I'm getting a little sweaty as I type this on our front porch, and I think our neighbor Jon is about to join me for a cold beverage.
